Private Label Versus White Label in The Beauty Industry

Beauty and skin care products staged with white rocks on a white table with a gold background

Now couldn’t be a better time to start a business. Beauty brands are popping up left and right, coming out with new products almost weekly. People are finding producers and manufacturers for their products, and they want the highest quality possible.

Start-up brands may be small, but they are mighty. Many have tapped into their specific niche direction and are running with it. For example, Megan Cox created her own organic personalized care products such as rejuvenating serums. Originally, she started developing an eyelash growth serum for her friends and herself. Her friends were so impressed by her product that they collectively persuaded her to start a business.

Coming up with new products is not as easy as it seems. Most start-up businesses must jump through hoops to meet the standards of health and safety. Creating formulas and helping you develop your product is what we do best at Federal Package. Our Chemists work with you to develop formulas for your products until they’re perfect for your brand.

Numerous celebrities and social media influencers have bankrolled their current audience and created their own beauty brands. For example, Rhianna created Fenty, Kim Kardashian created SKKW Beauty, and One Size Beauty was created by Patrick Starrr. Unlike large brands, smaller brands usually do not have a chemistry background, therefore making it more difficult of a process to create these items. There are two avenues to consider when developing a product, white labeling and private labeling.

White Label

One approach to starting your own cosmetic brand is called white label. Many cosmetics are made overseas. It may come as a surprise to many after learning that numerous beauty products from different brands may contain the exact same elements. Estheticians, salon owners, and internet sellers can build a beauty brand without investing in packaging, manufacturing, and formulation. Basically, products are bought by such people and they label them as their own. This is a great way to get your foot in the door if you are hoping to start your own company.

Small start-up companies can benefit from this avenue since there isn’t any development cost, economical minimums, and zero concern about supply. These companies keep a stockpile of products at all times. All brands have to do is label and package them with their own customizations. The brand is more like a facilitator rather than a generator in a sense. It is a fantastic way for salons, stores, and kiosks to add worth to their business. The producers still follow the same rules and regulations any product would have to. Meaning that these products are just as secure and potent as any other. In these cases, a client only needs money and a plan of what they want to sell. One downside of this type of lab is that packaging can often come off as dull or uninspiring. A brand may have less control over what type of packaging your product would come in and where it comes from.

Private Label

Private label is when products are created by a manufacturer, and they allow companies to sell these products under their own brand name. These manufacturing companies remain in control over their products. For example, they still manage the specifications and quality of the products. The company and products are still certified although if they wanted to rebrand they would need independent authorization.

Private label companies create and package many of the products you see online and in stores. For instance, cosmetic labs will suggest business-to-business solutions for a brand to make its own commodities. Some even offer the creative side of things and will design and create one-of-a-kind packaging. Private label labs reinforce the direction of the brand they are working with to give it the vitality it needs to make sure its morals, aspirations, and principles are met. Private label labs give you the ability to recreate your formula to give your product a unique selling proposition or to move in a particular trend direction. This can be done quickly and effectively with a private-label lab.
