What Is Lip Balm Made Of?

FP Labs is the leader in independent lip care manufacturers in the U.S. We’ve spent decades perfecting the art of the “hot pour” process so that every tube and tin delivers maximum performance.

Here is everything you need to know about how these essential products are formulated and manufactured.

What is Lip Balm?

Lip balm is a topical ointment, typically made from wax, oil, and other emollients, used to moisturize and protect the lips. Because the skin on our lips is much thinner than the rest of our body and lacks oil glands, it’s highly susceptible to environmental damage.

Lip balm creates an occlusive barrier on the lips, preventing moisture from escaping and helping keep them hydrated.

What Are the Main Ingredients in Lip Balm?

The effectiveness of a lip balm product depends on its base and active components. At FP Labs, when we develop a lip balm formulation, we focus on two primary categories:

  • More Common: Anhydrous (Water-Free). Formulations consist of oils, butters, waxes, and other lipophilic (oil-loving) ingredients. This makes them stable without preservatives.
  • Emulsion-Based Formulations (Water-In-Oil, Oil-In-Water). Incorporating a water phase emulsified into the oil or wax base allows the inclusion of water-soluble actives, humectants (such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid), or other fast-absorbing moisturizers. Emulsions require preservatives, which are more complex to formulate and stabilize

Common lip balm ingredients can include:

  • Camphor
  • Carnauba wax
  • Beeswax
  • Cetyl alcohol
  • Paraffin
  • Lanolin
  • Petrolatum (commonly known as petroleum jelly)

To help differentiate a brand, we can incorporate specialized components:

  • Hydrating and Moisturizing. Emphasize emollients and humectants (e.g., shea butter, vitamin E, plant oils) for dry or chapped lips.
  • Protective Barriers. Focus on occlusive agents (waxes, petrolatum) to shield against wind, cold, pollution, or environmental damage.
  • Medicated or Treatment. Active ingredients such as menthol, camphor, and salicylic acid provide soothing/tingling relief or healing for cracked lips.
  • SPF and Sunscreen. Incorporate UV filters (e.g., zinc oxide/titanium dioxide or chemical) for sun protection.
  • Tinted or Colored. Add pigments or dyes for subtle color while providing care (a hybrid between balm and light lipstick).
  • Plumping or Volumizing. Often include irritants (e.g., cinnamon, peppermint) or peptides for temporary fullness.
  • Natural/Organic or Vegan. Use plant-based waxes (candelilla, carnauba, rice bran) instead of beeswax; avoid synthetic ingredients.

Do I have to use fragrances in my lip balm?

No at all. Some brands prefer to be fragrance-free. This can be ideal for sensitive skin or “clean beauty” lines to minimize irritation.

Additional Ingredients in Lip Balm

Choosing the right lip moisturizer ingredients is key! Many brands are following clean, sustainable beauty standards that prioritize renewable, non-petroleum-based ingredients and high-performing or specialty additives to create a truly unique blend.

Our team of industry experts can make sure your ingredients perform well together and blend thoroughly to create a consistent product.

How are Lip Balms Made? The Manufacturing Process

Transitioning from a list of raw materials to a retail-ready product requires precision. At FP Labs, our product development process follows a strict protocol:

  1. Blending and Compounding. The ingredients are heated and blended in large stainless steel tanks. This “hot pour” method delivers a homogenous mixture.
  2. Filling. The compounded blend is moved to an automated manufacturing line. We offer a variety of innovative container designs, including our revolutionary one-hand collar-style tubes.
  3. Cooling and Solidifying. As the product leaves the filler, it’s cooled to solidify without cracking or separating. Once solidified, the cap is gently placed on the filled container.
  4. Labeling and Packout. The lip balm proceeds to the next step, which can include labeling or a secondary package, such as a carton or blister card.
  5. Quality Control. Every batch is tracked with a lot code and undergoes rigorous testing in our FDA-registered facility to meet stringent quality assurance standards. The product is now ready to ship to your retail partners or directly to excited customers!

Customizing Your Formula

Want to customize your lip balm formulation? We can help with that! Whether you are looking for a solid sunscreen stick for the beach or a luxury nighttime lip mask, the choice of components matters. Many brands are shifting from petroleum-based solids to sustainable, plant-derived alternatives to meet consumer demand for “clean” labels.
